Aurora are at least somewhat predictable. When there a solar storm ejecting stuff in our direction, we’ll get active aurora a couple days later. At that point, you just need clear weather and preferably a new moon for darker skies.

I live in Iceland, and I go shoot Aurora sometimes. There’s luck involved, but you can get the odds at least decent with simple planning.
