Yup. The spacecraft was the Challenger ~~Skylab station~~. (Edit: Thanks SchuminWeb for the correction!)

I believe the idea was to allow them more freedom of movement when working outside the station. A few other options are robotic arms and tethering, which basically means they’re hooked to the station with a rope/cable. Naturally you’d imagine it would be more limited than being able to freely fly around in space like a boss.
After the challenger disaster they scrapped the idea because it was too dangerous.
